چکیده

The correct display of edges in half-toned images is nec essary for accurate image reproduction. This problem has been addressed by pre-processing the image to en hance the edges or by altering the half-toning algorithm to account for edges. In this paper we present a post processing edge enhancement technique that is applicar ble to all half-toning algorithms. We identify two types of edge pixels in the image; dark and light edge pixels. Edges in an image are highlighted by setting the dark/light edge pixels to black/white. Our method was tested on a modern laser printer and hence our evaluation of the technique is restricted to clustered half-toning methods. We evaluated the effect of enhancing edges by con ducting a user survey to determine the perceived value of the different edge enhancement methods. The results of the user survey, while not statistically significant, in dicate that our post-processing technique achieves com parable results to previous edge enhancement methods. Our technique is simple to implement and can be applied to any half-toning technique and thus is a good default edge-enhancing approach.

Threshold-diffuse hybrid half-toning methods

Gray-scale images can be displayed on binary display devices using a process known as half-toning where gray intensities are approximated by different distributions of black and white pixels. There is a significant number of methods with which these binary or half-toned approximations can be generated. Most of the available methods can be categorized as either a threshold-matrix half-toning met...

Special Eeects with Half-toning

Half-toning is the process by which gray-scale images are approximated with sets of black and white pixels. The process works because our eyes perceive a local average, thus half-toning seeks to approximate the local average. Ideally this approximation should be accomplished without introducingùndesirable' artifacts. In many situations the stylized display of images is desired. Often this styli...

Descreening of color halftone images in the frequency domain

Scanning a halftone image introduces halftone artifacts, known as Moire patterns, which significantly degrade the image quality. Printers that use amplitude modulation (AM) screening for halftone printing position dots in a periodic pattern. Therefore, frequencies relating half toning arc easily identifiable in the frequency domain. This paper proposes a method for de screening scanned color ha...

Image Structure Retrieval via L0 Minimization

Retrieving salient structure from textured images is an important but difficult problem in computer vision because texture, which can be irregular, anisotropic, non-uniform and complex, shares many of the same properties as structure. Observing that salient structure in a textured image should be piece-wise smooth, we present a method to retrieve such structures using an L0 minimization of a mo...
